The Port Lewis Impression Pad is a wonderful tool to help you determine if your saddle works for your horse. There are a couple difficulties in working with it - some horses don`t like the cold plastic feel, it can be slippery, both on the horse and the saddle side and the velcro tabs get full of hair over time.
We have designed a shell to place the Impression Pad in, which helps with all of these issues. It is made from Cordura which will hold up to a lot of use. The top of the Shell has a velcro pocket to place the Impression Pad in, allowing the Pad to be viewed and removed while the Shell remains in place. This pocket will also keep the Impression Pad in place in case the velcro tabs come apart. And just in case of a dough leak, you can protect the saddle that you are testing.
The Shell has velcroed keeper straps to go around the cinch or girth, as well as a velcro strap to fix the Shell, Pad and saddle in a stable configuration while riding. When done riding, undo the keeper straps and lift the saddle off the horse, leaving the Impression Pad and Shell in place. This way you can take an initial look at the Impression Pad in relation to it`s position on the horse to determine where an issue might be.
This configuration is much more comfortable for the horse, since the girth rigging hardware of some saddles can pinch without a pad in place. The Shell is large enough for all types of saddles.
We have tested the material to ensure that heat transfer from the horse to the Impression Pad is not reduced so that you don`t need to increase riding time.
